Library Expansion Progress Report

November/December 2004

New Wing Opens December 16th

After years of planning and more than a year of construction, the first phase of the library’s expansion project draws to a close. On the evening of Thursday, December 16th, the new wing of the East Islip Public Library will be open to the public. Come and join us, beginning at 6:00 p.m. as we celebrate this momentous occasion with food, entertainment, and much pride.

Many people have helped us reach this goal. Let me first, thank you, the community for your patience during the construction, and for your support of the Bond Referendum. Your Library’s Board of Trustees has always been here to make sure the new library meets your needs while enhancing the image of our community. The construction crews have worked diligently, and our construction manager, Alex Manno, has worked hard saving us money while keeping the project on track. Christ Community Church has been a great neighbor, making their facilities available to us whenever needed. The staff and public have put up with many inconveniences and for that we are grateful. Donors have been very generous, with nearly $100,000 being given to the Library since the beginning of the project.

From December 6th through the afternoon of December 16th the Library is tentatively scheduled to close to the public. During this period we will move furniture, collections and services from the existing library into the brand new two-story structure. All loan periods for material checked out will be extended until Monday, December 20th.

As we move forward, we ask for your continued support and understanding. While we have much work and many months to go before the entire library is complete, patrons are invited to come to the opening of our new addition. We will be using the new east side entrance beginning December 16th, while the present building is renovated. Although all our services and collections will still not be completely restored, we anticipate that we will still be able to meet your needs.

The last phase of our project will be to renovate the existing Library’s interior and we expect this will be completed by this spring. We look forward to the completion of the expanded, technologically advanced, beautiful new library.

On behalf of the Board, staff, and myself, we wish our patrons a very joyous holiday season!
