Charitable Giving

A window of opportunity exists for you to be a permanent part of the new East Islip Public Library, or your gift can be used to honor someone in a way that preserves their name, while providing something special to the whole community for many generations. Some of the opportunities available include the purchase of stained glass windows for our periodical sitting area, benches and sculptures for our outdoor garden, a large fish tank at the entrance to our Children’s Room, construction of an outdoor amphitheatre for young adult’s and children’s programs, or display cases for the local history room. Obtaining Books and Materials

Please make sure to come in or call us (581-9200 Ext.5) to let us know if you need us to borrow books for you from another library. As you know, many of our books have been put into storage as the result of the library construction project. We will be adding new books as we usually do. It is the older books that we may have to borrow for you. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Virtual Reference Collection (VRC)

As a member of the East Islip Public Library you have a large selection of subscription databases available to you through the Virtual Reference Collection. You can access the VRC from any computer by going to our web page (www.eipl.org), clicking on the Virtual Reference Collection, and entering the barcode from your library card. Two of these databases you may want to explore are EBSCOHost and Rosetta Stone. EBSCOHost is a magazine collection and index. You can access articles from more than 750 general reference and popular periodicals. It also includes reference books, maps, flags, and images. Go to the VRC and click on magazines to access. Rosetta Stone Language Learning is a software program designed for people wanting to improve their English skills. It is an interactive product that allows you to learn English at your own pace. Go to the VRC and click on Education and Careers to access. Get a Suffolk Web account and give it a try!

Blood Pressure Screening

Blood pressure screening is on the 4th Tuesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. There is no fee and no appointment necessary.

Homebound Service

    The East Islip Public Library offers a Homebound Service to our patrons who are unable to visit the library due to a temporary or permanent illness or disability.  Homebound patrons will be able to choose titles from the library’s new book collection, large print and regular book collections.     An Application and approval is necessary to qualify for this service, which is free of charge.  If you have any questions about the details of this service, or if you would like an application, please contact Jo-Ann Carhart at 581-9200 ext. 5.
 

In addition to fiction and non-fiction books to borrow, the library offers many other materials for you to use or borrow.  There is something for everyone! Periodicals by Season - here are a selection of periodicals that we subscribed to and that are arranged by subject for easy browsing.

Each month, the library offers programs of interest to the community.  You can find information about these programs by clicking on the CALENDAR OF EVENTS section of the web page.  In addition, here are some of the  programs we offer weekly, monthly or annually. 

• Hatha Yoga - Classes are held at the library every Monday 9:00-10:00 a.m. and 6-7 p.m., Wednesday 7:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday 9-10 a.m. and Saturday 9-10 a.m. Fee: $4 per session. Please bring a towel or mat with you.

• Bridge Club - Wednesdays, 10 A.M. - 2 P.M.  All levels are welcome.  Just bring a deck of cards.

• Book Discussion - Generally the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M.                                                 

• Defensive Driving - Sponsored by the National Traffic Safety Institute, this six-hour course saves 10% on comprehensive and liability insurance for three years and removes up to four points from a driver's record.

• Annual Juried Art Show - In October of each year, the Arts Council of the East Islip Public Library sponsors a juried art show at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum.

• Travel Brochures - Each spring the library provides a display of travel brochures for you to take home and use in your summer vacation planning.

The library publishes newsletters and booklets to help you with your information needs.  To obtain a copy, ask a librarian.

• Librafax  - Bi-monthly library newsletter.

• Little Librafax - Monthly children's newsletter

• Great Reading for Any Season - An annual publication of staff reading suggestions.

• Oprah Book List - An ongoing list of the Oprah Book Club books.

• Getting Started with Genealogy - A booklet explaining how to begin your family history search at the Library.

• Travel Travel Travel - A list of books, magazines and web sites that provide information.  To help you with your travel plans.
