Library Expansion Progress Report
January / February 2004
The heading on the November - December Librafax
was "The Adventure Begins!" and it
surely does seem like an adventure. In the words
of John Steinbeck (originally appearing in the
poem "To a Mouse" by Robert Burns).
. . "The best laid plans of mice and men..."
well, you know the rest. When digging the basement
for the new wing of the building, the construction
crew discovered that there was sand under the
existing building (which was built in 1967)
rather than the cohesive material expected based
on numerous soil samples for the land beneath
the new building. Because of the quick actions
of our construction company they were able to
avoid having this situation undermine our book
stacks. This forced us to empty the books from
this area and put many of them into storage
earlier than expected. Although we still have
many of our collections available, our ability
to serve you has been slightly compromised.
Please realize that anything we do not have,
we should be able to borrow for you and have
it in your hands within three business days.
Well things happen, and we and you will make
the best of it. Fortunately, this problem has
only had minor impact on the overall project
and work has continued on a regular basis. So
where are we? Foundation work and demolition
are about to start. As you can see and sometimes
hear, other work as well moves forward.
As always, we appreciate your patience and
good humor as we all live through these temporary
inconveniences.
