Library Expansion Progress Report
May / June 2004
Thank you! On Tuesday, April 20th, by a vote
of more than two to one, the community passed
our annual operating budget for the upcoming
fiscal year 2004-2005. On behalf of the Board
of Trustees, the Library Director, and staff,
please accept our appreciation for your continued
support and the value that you place in our
library services. By the end of the fiscal year
- June 2005, we will all be in the new renovated
and expanded East Islip Public Library. Your
support guarantees that when we move into our
new library we will be able to continue to provide
you the high level of service you have grown
to expect.
If you have been to the Library lately you
will see construction underway. Steel for the
new wing of the building has gone up and construction
crews have been working on the front of the
building as well. With the exception of all
the April Showers, work is progressing at a
good pace.
Because of the construction in the front of
the building, the walkway from the Harwood Avenue
parking lot had to temporarily be rerouted over
grass. We suggest that those patrons with carriages
and the handicapped use the Main Street parking
lot for easier access.
We are currently in the process of conducting
a fund raising campaign to purchase special
enhancements for our new building. Already we
have received commitments for the purchase of
two vintage style lampposts, a custom designed
stained glass window, a baby grand piano, and
a grandfather clock. There are many beautiful
things still available. This is an opportunity
for you to honor someone in a way that preserves
their name, while providing something special
for the whole community for many generations
to come. Please pick up a brochure in our lobby
or call our Library Director, Guy Edwards at
581-9200 ext. 7.
Thank you!
As you are probably aware, back in May of 2003
the library purchased the adjacent parcel of
land which housed a dry cleaning business. This
building and property has made everybody's life
easier by giving us a place to have a staging
area and storage while our library is renovated
and expanded.
Since the steel has gone up on our new library,
it is now time to think of how we might use
this adjacent building. We have received many
suggestions from individuals, but we welcome
more input from the community. Please give our
Library Director a call at the above number
if you have any ideas or suggestions.
