Connetquot River State Park Preserve maintains 3,473 acres of land and water for the protection and propagation of game birds, fish and animals. Deer and waterfowl are numerous, rare nesting birds, including the osprey, are present and there are numerous rare plants, such as trailing arbutus and pyxie moss in their natural habitats. The preserve also has 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding, cross-country ski and nature trails, as well as fishing (by permit only) on the Connetquot River.

An excellent example of teamwork between organizations is the South Shore Nature Center. The Nature Conservancy acquired about 44 acres between 1969 and 1972. The Town of Islip purchased 87 acres in the northern half, while the county obtained most of the south half. The NY Department of Environmental Conservation acquired the southern tip. These were cobbled together to create the 206-acre nature center. The town has operated it since 1977.
Hours: 9 am to 5 pm every day from April through October.

Heckscher State Park has more than a million visitors a year. Twenty miles of trails attract hikers, bicycle and cross-country skiers. Swimmers can use the Great South Bay or the swimming pool complex. There are picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, playing fields, playground and 69 campsites. Only vehicles under eleven feet high can come into the campgrounds.
